About Us

“The principle under pinning our day to day work is that good saddle fit is essential to the welfare and performance of your horse. Whether you are working in the horse industry, or riding is your hobby, your horse will not live up to its maximum potential if a poorly fitting saddle is causing discomfort or pain. Time and money can be wasted training a horse and rider if the horse is limited by back pain. This applies not just to the high performance competition horse, but also to a child’s first pony, or a weekend hack. Many horses’ behavioural problems are as a reaction to discomfort or pain of which an incorrect saddle or saddle fit is a very preventable cause.”

Our Team

Saddle Fitters

Our saddle fitting team in Exeter consists of three Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitters, including Janet, our Master Saddler. In addition to having more than 30 years of saddle fitting experience, Janet is qualified to make and repair saddles and bridles.

Why you should use a Master Saddler

Janet

Janet Legg, Qualified Saddle fitter and Master Saddler

Janet has been part of the Nutwell Saddlery team from the beginning. She qualified as a Saddle Fitter in 1995 and after 10 years of service, the Society of Master Saddlers invited her to become a Master Saddler. As one of only eight Master Saddlers in the South West, Janet is a valuable member of the Nutwell Saddlery team.

Kerry

Kerry Davidson, Qualified Saddle Fitter

After qualifying as a veterinary nurse from The Royal Veterinary College in London, Kerry spent many years nursing at some of the country’ s best equine veterinary practices. In 2005, she decided on a career change and joined Nutwell Saddlery. She became a Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitter in October 2008 and in addition to fitting saddles, is kept busy managing all of the marketing for Nutwell Saddlery.

Kate

Kate Scott Smith, Qualified Saddle Fitter

Kate joined Nutwell Saddlery as an apprentice in 2007 and has worked extremely hard to gain the experience and knowledge required to become a Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitter. Notably, in 2009, Kate was one of only three people in the UK to pass her exams.

Kayleigh

Kayleigh Walters

Kayleigh joined us in June 2010 and has quickly become an indispensable asset for Janet, Kerry and Kate. Kayleigh answers the phones, dealing with all customers bookings, enquiries and generally keeps us all on the straight and narrow.

Our Facilities

Nutwell Saddlery is based on the beautiful Nutwell Estate, also home to St David’s Equine practice and many equestrian events such as the Nutwell Horse Trials. Nutwell Estate boasts some of the best equestrian facilities in the South West.

Our superb saddle fitting facilities include a purpose built saddle studio which leads directly to our consultation and examination area. Here we have two purpose built loose boxes to allow your horse to relax and settle before the fitting begins. The fitting rooms have direct access to our beautiful indoor area with a superb Martin Collins surface and show jumps, this enables the fit of the saddle to be thoroughly tested and evaluated.

St David’s Equine Practice is the longest established equine veterinary practice in the South West. It is highly successful and offers a complete range of services, from official height measurement to complex surgery. If your horse is suffering from back pain, perhaps caused by an ill-fitting saddle, St David’s offers a wide range of services and treatments, including bone scanning, x-ray, ultrasound and physiotherapy.
