With the weather improving, many are starting their young horses education and doing this in a correctly fitting saddle, is essential. A horse that is backed in an ill-fitting saddle will alter its ‘ridden’ posture, to compensate from any discomfort felt. This can create problems for the future.
It is always best to work with your equine bodyworker and The Society of Master Saddlers saddle fitter to come up with a plan to have a saddle to start your horse’s training in. It can then continue its ridden education without discomfort. It is then advised that you have your youngsters reviewed by both the saddle fitter and bodyworker, every three months as the young equine does not develop fully until at least seven years old.
Correct training means the horse should strengthen and muscle up, and your correctly fitting saddle will allow the horse to do that. The old-fashioned attitude of any saddle will do, is unfortunately not going to help your cause. A horse can feel the points of a tree digging in, even without weight through its back from a rider, when girthed.
