Why is saddle fitting important?

Saddle fitting is crucial to the welfare and performance of any ridden horse. A horse (like any human) can have fluctuations to its body shape for many reasons. These can be caused by a change of home, environment, feed, exercise or illness for example.

The tree shape and panel design of saddle will have been chosen by your Society of Master Saddlers’ saddle fitter as most suitable for your horse at the time of fitting. However, as horse owners we all know how quickly things can change. Working with your saddle fitter when you feel a change in your horse, or when you are recommended a saddle fit by your equine physiotherapist/body worker or vet is always a really good idea. Saddle fitters can help by adjusting the fit of the saddle, maybe in some cases supplying a new one in times of drastic change. If the saddle is not fitting correctly, you will likely see a loss of performance, or it may lead to injury.

It sometimes may be necessary to see your saddle fitter more often than you would like (in the cases of a remedial/rehabilitation fit for example) but this will no doubt save more financial spend in the long run.

Saddle fitters will also perform the basic safety checks on your saddle during a check.

Why is it important to use a qualified saddle fitter?

Becoming a Society of Master Saddlers’ Qualified Saddle Fitter takes at least two years and combines training that is on-the-job, theory and attending practical days. A qualified saddler brings this and their experience to your appointment.

Your saddle fitter will look at the whole picture; horse, saddle and rider to check the soundness of the saddle, the fit of the saddle, the suitability of the saddle and are generally, other than the instructor, the only professional person to see you ride your horse.

Going forward, they can provide advice and liaise with your other chosen equine professionals to ensure your horse is the most comfortable they can be, in their ridden work.
